This summer I am training to participate in the Challenge for Hope rowing event on August 20th to raise money for a cause that is very important to me: children living with type 1 diabetes. I am proud to support a cause that not only touches me personally but also many children and families across Canada.

Despite being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in my adulthood, this did not protect me from the common series of emotions that accompany a life changing experience: fear, shock, anger, and feeling overwhelmed. I can only imagine what it would have been like to grow up with the disease. Managing diabetes is no easy task regardless of age or maturity. Children and youth living with diabetes face challenging obstacles each and every day:

  • Insulin injections four to six times a day to survive
  • Pricking their fingers six to eight times a day to test blood sugar levels
  • Extensive meal planning
  • Daily Exercise

Once you acquire diabetes, you have no option but to live with it, manage it and control it-24 hours a day, 365 days a year-for the rest of your life.

In my case, diabetes has made me re-examine what it means to live life passionately and to embrace the unpredictable flow of each new day with a sense of joy and happiness. I am grateful for all the support I have received from my friends, family, and health care team who are helping me learn about my new body and emotions so that I can live a life I absolutely love!

Our team captain is former Olympic gold medalist, Chris Jarvis, a friend and fellow type 1 athlete who truly exemplifies what it means to live life without limitation. Together we will be bringing our infectious enthusiasm to an event in which every donation counts and helps the Diabetes Hope Foundation move closer to achieving its vision of providing children and adolescents with the tools they need to achieve success in all aspects of their lives as well as maintain good health in the years to come.

Thank you for considering my request! More action shots to come!

About the Challenge

The Challenge for Hope Rowing and Viking Festival is Toronto's newest rowing event brought to the community to raise awareness and funding for Ontario children and youth living with diabetes by 4 hosting partners Bayside Rowing Club, Diabetes Hope Foundation, I Challenge Diabetes and Toronto Police Service*. This is the event's inaugural year and will take place on August 20th at the Bayside Rowing Club along Toronto's waterfront. Our community event will be a public event open to all interested and will be free to attendees.

Proceeds from the event will support Diabetes Hope Foundation's diabetes camp programming for children and youth living with type 1 diabetes. With your support, Diabetes Hope Foundation will send at-risk and low-income youth with diabetes away to camp in 2012.

*Note: This event is also an advocacy initiative as the TPS has strict hiring policies regarding people living with type 1 diabetes.
